Phonics

What is Phonics?

Systematic Synthetic Phonics is the statutory method of teaching Early Reading in the UK. Throughout Reception and Key Stage 1, your child will learn a series of sounds (phonemes) and letters (graphemes) that will enable them to read words.

At St Richard's, we follow the Monster Phonics scheme.

In Term 4, we will be recapping the Phase 2 sounds: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r h b f ff l ll ss

and the Phase 3 sounds: j v w x y z zz qu ch sh th ng oo ar ee ow ur ai or oa er

We will learn Phase 3 trigraphs when schools re-open (from Week 9): igh, air, oi, ear, ure.

using the Monster Phonics retellings of 'Rapunzel' and 'The Frog Prince'. (Linked below)

During Term 3 and 4 we will begin to write Phase 2 tricky words, and learn to read Phase 3 Tricky words.
