Term 2

Term 2- Enchanted Woodland

This term our theme is 'Enchanted Woodland'. The stories we will be basing our learning around are 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson and 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell. We will also be looking at non-fiction texts about woodland animals and habitats this term and The Nativity story as we draw closer to Christmas time.

We are very much looking forward to an Autumn walk to explore the change of seasons, baking a Gruffalo crumble and taking part in forest school activities.

In maths this term, we will be representing, comparing and looking at the composition of numbers to 5, exploring one more and one less, and investigating 2d shapes. We will also be working on positional language and time (daily routines- day, night, morning, afternoon, today, tomorrow etc).

In phonics, we will be continuing our learning of phase 2 sounds and the corresponding graphemes. We will learn how to blend to read simple words and segment to spell cvc  words(consonant, vowel, consonant e.g- c-a-t). We will also be learning to read many more tricky words by sight.

Read our medium term plan (below), for more information about the learning we have planned for this term.

Our class texts this term...

Our Gruffalo Hunt!

We followed the clues around the school grounds to find the Gruffalo! He was hiding in our book corner!

Gruffalo Crumble

We baked our very own Gruffalo crumble! Yum!

Diwali & Hinduism Day

We painted our very own diwa lamps, learnt a traditional diwali dance and experienced paint throwing which is traditionally done during Holi 'the festival of colours'.

Maths

We have done lots of learning about 2d shapes this term. We have sorted shapes and discussed the properties of each shape using mathematical language such as sides, corners, longer, equal, shorter, round, straight and curved.

We went on a shape hunt around the school and worked with a partner to record  how many shapes we could find.

Kandinsky Inspired Art

We looked at several pieces of artwork by Kandinsky and were inspired to create our own 2D shape art. They turned out amazingly well! Great job Castle Class!

Remembrance Day

We made poppies to wear, poppy wreaths and baked poppy biscuits to remember the soldiers.

Child Initiated Learning

We had a very special visit from Father Christmas!
