Lighthouse Class

Hanukkah

In Lighthouse Class, we learned all about Hanukkah, the festival of lights. We learned that 2500 years ago, King Antiochus, the king of Syria, told all of Israel they must worship his gods. King Antiochus and his army burned down the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. We acted out this story of how Judah Maccabee and his brothers fought against King Antiochus' army and won the battle, with God providing a miracle of keeping the candles burning for eight days when there was only enough oil for one day. Lighthouse Class really enjoyed taking part in this drama activity to explore the events of the story.

We also learned about how Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah, and one of the ways in which they do this is by playing a game called dreidel. The children each made a dreidel out of paper and learned how to play the game.
