Romans: How did the Romans change Britain?
Our learning this term is all about the Romans - specifically a History focus exploring impact of Roman life on Britain, comparing elements of Roman life in Britain with pre-Roman Britain and exploring what made the Roman invasion successful. We will continue to develop our knowledge of the chronology of Britain building on our Year 3 knowledge of Prehistoric Britain.
In RE, our topics this term are:
- Reconciliation- Inter-relating: We will begin to explore reconciliation and how we build and strengthen relationships in our everyday lives.
- Universal Church: We will be discovering why ordinary people do extraordinary things, learning from accounts and real-life examples.
In Maths, we will cover several topics; Money, Time, Shape and angles, Statistics, and Position and direction. We will be focusing on understanding the concept of decimals representing part of a whole with equivalent fractions, how decimals can be partitioned and how to round to the nearest whole number.
Money: We will be comparing amounts and converting between pounds and pence, estimating and calculating amounts using British currency.
Time: We will recognise durations of time from Years through to seconds, read the 12 and 24-hour clock in both analogue and digital formats before learning to convert between the 12 and 24 hour clocks.
Shapes and angles: We will begin with angles as a turn before identifying and comparing angles. Then we will use this knowledge when exploring triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons. Finally, we will use our knowledge to further develop our understanding of symmetry.
Statistics: We will learn to read, interpret and draw charts and line graphs.
Position and direction: We will begin by describing the position using co-ordinates. Then we will further develop our understanding of co-ordinates by plotting points and shapes before translating them using co-ordinate grid references.
In Science, we are learning about living things; understanding the characteristics of living things, recognising that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways and recognising that environments can change.
In Art and Design we will explore the art work of Antoni Gaudi and our own St Richard's family member, Mrs. Brown, learning about mosaic and tile artwork based on the art of the Ancient Romans.
In English, we will further develop our understanding of the Romans through the text Escape from Pompeii (written and illustrated by Christina Balit). We will be writing part of a narrative, learning how to characterise speech. We will identify the features, developing an understanding of modifying nouns and verbs and further exploring complex sentence structures.
