Volcanoes: how are volcanoes formed?

Our learning this term is all about Volcanoes - specifically a Geography focus exploring the formation of the Earth, how volcanoes are formed and the impact of volcanoes on the people and environment. We will continue to develop on the Year 4 learning of earthquakes and plate tectonics.

In RE, our topics this term are:

  • Lent/Easter – Giving: we will learn of the event of Holy week, how we celebrate and understand that celebrating and responding to self-discipline is important and that we can celebrate growth to new life through self-discipline.
  • Reconciliation- Inter-relating: We will begin to explore reconciliation and how we build and strengthen relationships in our everyday lives.

In Maths, our learning is decimals. We will be focusing on understanding the concept of decimals representing part of a whole with equivalent fractions, how decimals can be partitioned and how to round to the nearest whole number. We will also begin our topic of money, comparing amounts and converting between pounds and pence.

In Science, we are learning about sound, identifying that sounds get fainter the further away they are, that vibrations create them and finding patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produce them.

In Art and Design we will explore the art work of Nick Rowland and Margaret Godfrey, experimenting with medium whilst building on our key stage one knowledge of the colour wheel.

In English, we will further develop our understanding of volcanoes looking at the text Lava (by Disney Pixar, written and directed by James Ford Murphey). We will be writing a journalistic report, identifying the features, developing a rich understanding of vocabulary associated with journalistic language and further exploring complex sentence structures.
