'are' flash cards

9:30 - 10:00am - Morning Registration Zoom link below

10:00 - 10:30 - English Writing

Learning Objective: To be able to use prepositions and contractions.

Hopefully, it will be clear from our Zoom chat but here is the outline for today's writing.

We are writing the opening paragraph (or chunk) of our story. We are introduced to a young owl called Plop who doesn't like the dark.

Sentence 1 - We are writing a prepositional sentence to describe where Plop is. Below is a powerpoint with some different examples of prepositions.

Gather prepositions that describe he is up high - above, over, on top of, up...

Gather nouns to describe where he is and what he can see - branches, trees, leaves, fields, villages, houses...

Gather adjectives to describe these nouns - green, huge, vast, busy, tall...

Here is my model: High up in the leafy canopy, Plop the owl was sharing his worries with his mum.

Your sentence needs to introduce Plop and tell the reader where he is and that he is talking to his mum.

Sentence 2 - This is a sentence to tell the reader that he does not like the dark. We are going to use a contraction in our sentence. Below is a powerpoint with some example contractions in it.

Gather some negative contractions - don't, can't, isn't, haven't, won't, shan't...

Gather some ideas of how Plop might use these contractions to say he doesn't like the dark - I don't like the dark, I can't go out at night because it's too dark, It isn't safe for me to go out at night, I shan't come with you on night hunts....

Here is my model: "I don't want to be a night bird," said Plop.

Sentence/Chunk 3 - This is going to be some dialogue between Plop and his mum. Act out a conversation between Plop and his mum. Plop doesn't like the dark and mum replies to him. What would she say to him about the dark? (It's not that bad. How do you know you don't like it? The dark isn't scary Plop. etc...)

Here is my model: "The dark is nasty," he whispered.

"You don't know that," replied Mum. "You need to find out more about the dark before you make up your mind."

I hope that all makes sense and you can go and write your opening paragraph for our story.

Plot Point 1 - Plop talking to his mum high up in the tree.

Imagine this is what Plop can see from up high in his tree. How could you describe it?

10:45 - 11:15 - English Reading

Learning Objective: To be able to retrieve information from a text.

Here is a recap of me reading Owl Babies yesterday.

Owl Babies

Now see if you can answer these questions about the story.

11:15 - 12:15 - Maths - Making Equal Groups.

Learning Objective: To be able to make different groups.

Here are some different question sheets for you to try (you can draw/write the questions in your books). Don't feel you have to do all of them. I've put a range of different questions so you can choose which ones you want to complete. You could even use resources from around your home to make equal groups and write sentences about them.

1:20 - 2:10 Science. Look through the powerpoint all about the different seasons.

Learning Objective: To find out about different seasons and how to describe them.

Now draw a picture of the four different seasons including a person wearing the correct type of clothes for each season.

See example below.

Write some sentences to describe the different seasons.
