Maths Week 2 (Days 6-10):
‘One More or One Less’ Home Learning Challenges.
Please choose 1 challenge to do with your grown-up each day.
English: Listen to/ Read ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Can you hear which line is repeating? Who are the characters? What do they want to do? How many people are chasing the gingerbread man? How can you keep count?
Phonics: Play the Buried Treasure phonics game on Phonics Play. Click start, Phase 2, then ‘Revise all Phase 2’. Please help your child read the words by pointing at the individual letters, asking for the sound it makes, and helping them blend those sounds back together to read the word. The child then decides if the word is real (treasure) or fake (trash). Please try to read at least 5 words.
English and Phonics: Listen to the story again. Lots of animals were in The Gingerbread Man! Draw a picture of your favourite animal from the story and write the name of the animal. You could draw a cat, a dog, a pig, a cow, a horse or a fox! The words in red can be sounded out using the sounds your child already knows. Use the sound mat below to help your child link sounds to letters during this activity.
English: Tell your grown-up the story of The Gingerbread Man. You could use different voices for the different characters and act out the story together.
Then draw a picture or make a model of the Gingerbread Man. You can use crayons, paints, pencils or make a model using playdough or cardboard boxes and tubes. Please take a photo of what you make and stick it into this book! What does the gingerbread man say? Can you make your picture or model say it?
Phonics: Play 'Dragons Den' phonics game on Phonics Play. Click start, Phase 2, then ‘Revise all Phase 2’.
Play the game in the same way you played buried treasure- help your child sound out the word and decide whether the word is real (green dragon) or fake (red dragon). Drag the word over to the dragon to see if you’re right! Link: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/buried-treasure
English: In the story, the little old man and the little old woman follow a recipe to make some Gingerbread Man cookies. Try making a recipe with your grown-up. You could make gingerbread men or a different sweet treat, or even something for lunch or dinner.
Can you find the list of ingredients? Where are the instructions for how to make it? What equipment will you need? You can draw a picture or take a photograph of what you make.
Phonics: Have a look in a recipe book or at a recipe online. What letters can you see in the recipe? Can you say their sounds? Can you sound out any of the words?
Challenge: can you see any tricky words: I, to, no, go, the ?
Phonics: Play 'Picnic on Pluto' phonics game on Phonics Play. Click start, Phase 2, then ‘Revise all Phase 2’.
Play the game in the same way you played buried treasure- help your child sound out the word and decide whether the word is real (bob the alien) or fake (obb the alien). Drag the word over to the correct alien to see if you’re right!
English: Learn the song ‘Gingerbread Man on the Run’ with your grown-up. The words are in the file below and it is sung to the tune of ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’. Singing songs and rhymes helps develop your speaking and language skills. Sing this song a few times. You could video yourself singing the song and send it to your teachers, or sing it for the rest of your family.
